How to Use a GigSky eSIM: Install, Activate and Avoid Roaming

Quick answer: install the GigSky eSIM while you have stable Wi-Fi, then select it as your mobile-data line when you are ready to travel. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM. On the GigSky line, turn roaming on if the plan instructions require it.

The settings sound a little backwards at first. You are not “roaming” on your expensive home plan; you are letting the travel eSIM connect to its partner network. Once you have done it once, it is much easier than hunting down a kiosk after a long flight.

This guide covers the clean setup, the activation timing trap, and the fixes worth trying before you panic-message support from an airport floor.

What you need before installation

Prepare these things before you open the QR code:

• An eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone or tablet.
• A stable Wi-Fi connection. GigSky recommends Wi-Fi for a reliable download.
• Your GigSky app login or the order email with the QR/activation details.
• A second screen or printed QR code if you are using camera scanning.
• A few minutes with enough battery. Do not begin on 4% while the boarding queue moves.

GigSky supports installation through its app or via the QR/activation information sent after web purchase. The app route is usually easiest when you have only one device because it can start installation without making you photograph a QR code shown on the same screen.

First: understand installation versus activation

These are different steps.

Installation puts the digital SIM profile on your phone. You can often do this before departure.

Activation starts the plan’s validity period. GigSky says country plans activate when the device connects to a covered network. However, a regional, world or cruise plan that covers your current location can activate when you download/install it.

Install GigSky with the app

This is the easy route if the option appears in your purchased plan.

1. Download the GigSky app and sign in.
2. Buy or open the plan for your destination.
3. Tap the install eSIM option.
4. Follow your phone’s prompts to add the mobile plan.
5. Give the new line a clear name: GigSky or GigSky Travel.
6. Leave it off until you are ready if your plan activation rule requires that.

If you have one phone and only a QR code, GigSky’s help centre says you can often use the app’s install option instead, or save the QR as an image and scan it using supported newer phone software.

Install GigSky with a QR code on iPhone

1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
2. Open Settings → Mobile Service/Cellular → Add eSIM.
3. Choose Use QR Code.
4. Scan the QR code from a second screen or printout.
5. Follow the on-screen prompts to download the plan.
6. Label the line GigSky.

When the time comes to use it:

1. Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data.
2. Select the GigSky line for mobile data.
3. Turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off. This stops the iPhone from silently falling back to your home line when the GigSky connection hesitates.
4. In the GigSky line settings, turn Data Roaming on if required by the plan instructions.
5. In the home SIM settings, keep Data Roaming off.

GigSky says the APN should be gigsky if the phone asks for it or if connection settings need to be entered manually. Most people should not need to touch the APN unless the eSIM is installed but refusing to connect.

Install GigSky on Samsung and Android

Android menus move around by brand, but the logic stays the same.

Samsung

1. Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
2. Tap Add eSIM.
3. Choose the option to scan a QR code from the service provider.
4. Scan the code and follow the download prompts.
5. Name the eSIM GigSky.
6. Select it as the preferred mobile-data SIM when travelling.
7. Enable data roaming for the GigSky eSIM if required.

Google Pixel and most other Android phones

1. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs.
2. Choose Add SIM / Download a SIM instead.
3. Scan the QR code or enter the activation code if offered.
4. Turn the new eSIM on and give it a useful label.
5. Select it for mobile data.
6. Turn on data roaming for that eSIM if the GigSky plan needs it.

If Android asks for an APN, create/select one named GigSky with the APN value gigsky, save it and select it. The exact labels differ by manufacturer.

The four settings that stop expensive mistakes

1. GigSky is the data line

Do not assume adding the eSIM makes your phone use it. Set it as the mobile-data line.

2. Home-line roaming is off

This is the big one. Your normal carrier line may still receive calls and texts, but data roaming should stay off unless you knowingly want to use it.

3. Data switching is off

On iPhone, disable data switching. On Android, check for similar auto-switch/mobile-data settings. You do not want the phone deciding that your normal SIM is a better idea.

4. Background data is under control

Turn off cloud backups, large app updates and Wi-Fi Assist. Download maps and entertainment before travelling. Your data lasts longer and troubleshooting is easier because you can see what is actually using it.

Can you use hotspot with GigSky?

GigSky’s support centre says personal hotspot is supported with its eSIM on Apple devices. Android can generally share mobile data too, although the exact instructions depend on the phone maker.

Before relying on hotspot for work, test it at home or after you land:

1. Turn on the GigSky eSIM for mobile data.
2. Enable Personal Hotspot / Mobile Hotspot.
3. Connect the laptop.
4. Load a lightweight page and make sure the connection is using the travel line.

Remember that a laptop can consume data much faster than a phone. Pause cloud sync, video autoplay and operating-system updates.

GigSky eSIM not working? Try this order

Most problems come from one of a handful of settings. Work through them in order instead of randomly resetting your whole phone.

1. Check coverage. Are you in a country/ship area included by this exact plan?
2. Check activation. Is the eSIM line turned on? Is the plan still valid?
3. Select GigSky for mobile data. This is the most common miss.
4. Turn roaming on for GigSky only. Keep your home line’s roaming off.
5. Turn data switching off.
6. Check the APN. Use gigsky if manual APN setup is needed.
7. Toggle airplane mode for 20 seconds, then restart the phone if necessary.
8. Try network selection. Leave it automatic first; follow plan support instructions if it needs a specific partner.
9. Check remaining data in the app.
10. Contact support with screenshots, destination, plan name and error message.

Do not delete the eSIM too quickly

If installation fails, your first instinct may be to delete the profile and start again. Stop for a moment. Some eSIM activation codes are single-use or have reinstallation rules. Check the order instructions or contact GigSky before deleting a profile that is partially installed.

Once everything is working, keep the GigSky eSIM labelled in your phone. GigSky allows future plans to be used on the same installed eSIM, which is much nicer than collecting random profiles after every holiday.
